Synopsis of Mural:

The Black Lives Matter movement has been increasingly gaining media attention through their constant battles and fights towards the alleviation of oppressive systematic regimes within the U.S. Black men and women are killed at alarming rates, solely based on the color of their skin. The intended art mural that will be done by students consists of three women, one of the women is Black, with her fist raised in the air. The symbolism behind this mural is the fact that Black people within the U.S. are silenced of their experiences and livelihoods, and continue to be murdered in many ways except physically by the police. In addition, the students wanted to add representation to accompany Black Lives Matter in this mural. These additions include the LGBTQ+ Flag, butterflies representing migration from the Latino community, along with the Mexican flag to symbolize the connection between BLM and the Latinx community due to both being minorities and experiencing discrimination. The students wanted to focus on specifically how Black folks are treated within the U.S., using information gained through the semester on colonialism, intersectionality, white supremacy, and more. The idea that wants to be portrayed shows how this country continues to silence our Black relatives with no consequence or justice. It is time to bring that issue forward through art, and the students decided it is important to discuss.
