Cultural Expressions 2021

Project Categories

Cultural Expressions allow school teams to have the option of picking amongst the 4 categories to present their project. The four categories are Mural, Teatro, Spoken Word/ Skit, Video, and Powerpoint.

Murals

Teams will be provided with canvas, paints, and brushes to complete their mural. All teams competing in the Mural Competition must have their team’s Mural ready to display the night of the competition and prepare an oral interpretation of the mural.

Spoken Word/Skit

The Skit may not be longer than 6 minutes. The presentation should be a theatrical presentation of the team’s original concepts (three facts/two statistics-extra points for bilingual).

Video

The video should be an original artistic expression of the topics (three facts /two statistics-extra points for bilingual).

PowerPoint

The PowerPoint presentation may not be longer than 6 minutes (three facts /two statistics-extra points for bilingual).

Cultural/social justice connections in mural

  • The mural's theme is focused on an identity of the group members.

  • Explain how the theme relates to the group members

  • The group understands the impacts of their theme

  • The mural encourages thinking and discussion

  • The mural is original and creative

Organization Of Mural

  • Our mural is aesthetically pleasing

  • Our mural is our best work - anyone can clearly see that we took our time and put a lot of care into its creation

  • Our mural is laid out/organized in a way that makes sense, even if we have to explain it first

Presentation Of Mural

  • Our group is able to clearly explain the theme of our mural and how that theme connects to one or more issues of social/environmental justice (contemporary or historical) or identity within our group ☐

  • Our group is able to clearly explain the symbolism in our mural, as well as any artwork that isn’t immediately identifiable to someone outside our group

  • Every member of our group contributed to the mural at some point (design, painting, explaining) and could answer questions about it if asked directly

Written Explanation of Mural

  • Our group has a written explanation of the theme of our mural to be presented with the actual mural itself

  • Our written explanation clearly connects the theme of our mural with one or more issues of social/environmental justice (contemporary or historical) or identity within our group

  • Our written explanation is professional and written in a formal style

  • Our written explanation has 2 or fewer spelling and grammar errors
